The First 24-48 Hours: The Most Critical Period

The first two days after surgery are when your body needs the most rest and recovery. It is important to pay attention to the following during this period:

  • Rest: Bed rest is essential. Sleeping with your head elevated above heart level using 2-3 pillows will reduce swelling and the risk of bleeding.
  • Cold Compress: Apply cold compresses wrapped in a cloth to your eye area and cheeks—without direct contact with the nose—in 15-20 minute intervals. This helps control bruising and swelling.
  • Nutrition: Consume only lukewarm or cold, soft, and liquid foods. Very hot foods and drinks can increase the risk of bleeding. Foods like soup, yogurt, and purées are ideal.
  • Nasal Packing: If packing has been placed in your nose, this will cause you to breathe through your mouth. Drink plenty of fluids and use moisturizing creams to prevent your lips from drying out. The packing will be removed at the time determined by your doctor (usually within 1-3 days).
  • Post-Operative Recovery Timeline

Although the recovery process varies from person to person, you can generally expect the following timeline. It is essential to follow your doctor's specific instructions at every step.

    TimeframeExpectations and To-Dos
First WeekMild bleeding in the form of oozing and nasal congestion are normal. Use the prescribed nasal sprays regularly for cleaning inside the nose. Avoid bending over, straining, and heavy lifting. If you need to sneeze, do so with your mouth open.
Weeks 2-4Most of the swelling and bruising will subside. You can start light-paced walks. However, it may still be too early for strenuous sports, swimming, and wearing glasses. Do not miss your doctor's appointments.
Months 1-3Your breathing will improve significantly. Crusting inside the nose will decrease. With your doctor's approval, you can gradually return to more active sports and your normal life.
3 Months and BeyondThe complete healing of nasal tissues and the nose taking its final shape can take 6 months to 1 year. You should be patient during this process and protect your nose from impacts.

Nutrition, Activity, and Other Important Notes

Nutrition: It is important to eat soft foods for the first week. Avoid hard and sticky foods that require excessive chewing. Drinking plenty of water helps your body heal and keeps the mucosa moist.
Activity: For the first 2 weeks, strictly avoid strenuous sports, lifting weights, and any movements that would strain you. Such activities can increase blood pressure and cause bleeding.
Sun and Glasses: Protect your nose from direct sunlight for the first 1-2 months post-surgery. Use a high-factor sunscreen if necessary. If the bone structure was involved, you should avoid wearing glasses for the period specified by your doctor (usually 4-6 weeks).
Nasal Hygiene: Gently cleaning the inside of your nose with saline or ocean water sprays recommended by your doctor prevents crusting and speeds up healing. Note that we do not perform sinus surgery in our clinic.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Will I have a lot of pain after septoplasty?
Answer: Post-operative pain is generally minimal and can be easily controlled with simple painkillers prescribed by your doctor. Patients usually feel discomfort from nasal congestion rather than pain.

When can I return to work or school?
Answer: This depends on the nature of your job. If you have a desk job, you can usually return after 1 week. If you have a physically demanding job, this period may extend to 2-3 weeks. You can make the best decision together with your doctor.

When will I see the final result of the surgery?
Answer: A significant improvement in breathing is felt within the first few weeks. However, it can take 6 months to 1 year for the tissues inside the nose to heal completely and for all the swelling to subside, revealing the final shape. It is important to be patient during this process.
